ABC Shows 'Traveler' a Little Love

Drama gets post-'Grey's' debut; 'Men in Trees' done for season

April 20, 2007

The new ABC drama "Traveler," which had been ticketed for a playing-out-the-string summertime run, will get an in-season debut after all.

The network will air what it's calling a "sneak preview" of the pilot episode, which follows two friends who are framed for an act of terrorism, on Thursday, May 10, following "Grey's Anatomy." The show will have its regular premiere at 10 p.m. ET Wednesday, May 30, with a second showing of the pilot.

"Traveler" stars Logan Marshall-Green ("The O.C.") and Matthew Bomer ("Tru Calling") as Tyler Fog and Jay Burchell, grad-school roommates who, on a trip to New York, decide to play a prank and roller-blade through an art museum. Upon their exit, they receive a call from their buddy Will Traveler (Aaron Stanford, "X-Men: The Last Stand") who says, "Sorry -- I had to do this," just before the museum blows up.

Branded as domestic terrorists after security footage catches them in their prank, Tyler and Jay go on the run, simultaneously trying to clear their names and figure out why someone they believed to be a friend would set them up.

The scheduling of the "Traveler" preview and a couple other ABC moves also signals that "Men in Trees," which previously occupied the post-"Grey's" spot on Thursdays, won't be back before the 2006-07 season ends next month. The show has received a pickup for next season, however, so it's likely that the five unaired episodes will carry over to the fall.

ABC is airing a two-hour "Grey's Anatomy" on May 3. A "Lost" clip show will fill the spot on May 17 -- the final Thursday of sweeps -- and re-air prior to the "Lost" finale on Wednesday, May 23.

"Traveler" also stars Steven Culp ("Desperate Housewives"), Viola Davis ("Century City"), Anthony Ruvivar ("Third Watch") and William Sadler ("Wonderfalls"). David DiGilio ("Eight Below") wrote the pilot, which was directed by David Nutter ("Smallville," "Band of Brothers").

ABC Cuts Out Thursday Competitors

'Grey's' carries Alphabet to victory

Fast National ratings for Thursday, April 19, 2007

The return of "Grey's Anatomy" after a brief absence revived ABC's ratings fortunes Thursday and led the network to a win for the night.

ABC averaged a 9.0 rating/15 share in primetime, topping the 8.2/13 for CBS. NBC, 4.6/8, finished third in households, although FOX, 4.5/7, had a few more viewers. The CW earned a 2.3/4.

ABC's lead among adults 18-49 was wider -- it scored a 5.2 rating in the key ad demographic, while second-place CBS drew a 3.6. NBC, 3.1, was third, followed by FOX, 2.5, and The CW, 1.6.

"Survivor: Fiji" won the 8 p.m. hour for CBS with an 8.1/13. ABC's "Ugly Betty" took second at 6.7/11, one of its lowest numbers of the season. "Are You Smarter Than a Fifth-Grader?" put FOX in third. "My Name Is Earl," 4.6/7, and a rerun of "The Office," 4.0/7, were fourth for NBC. The CW got a 2.5/4 from "Smallville."

At 9 p.m., "Grey's Anatomy" drew the night's biggest audience with a 13.7/21. CBS fell one spot to second with a "CSI" repeat, 8.1/13. CBS reclaimed the top spot at 10 p.m. as "Shark" posted an 8.5/14. "October Road" bled half its lead-in to finish at 6.7/11 for ABC, while NBC's "ER" came in at a below-average 6.1/10.

  • Booty Call: CBS' 'Pirate' Sets Sail in May

Some salty dog named Cameron Daddo will host, mateysSome salty dog named Cameron Daddo will host, mateys

CBS has set a Thursday, May 31 premiere date for "Pirate Master," a summer reality series from "Survivor" mastermind Mark Burnett. The show will air through the summer on Thursday nights at 8 p.m. ET.

On "Pirate Master," 16 contestants will live aboard a 179-food, square-rigged barque. Over the course of 33 days, they'll live as buccaneers, traveling around a Caribbean island in search of a treasure totaling $1 million. Each episode will find the contestants gathering at Pirate's Court, where they'll state their case and somebody will be cut adrift.

"'Pirate Master' breaks new ground in that it's the collision of fantasy and reality," Burnett says. "This is a show where, in true pirate fashion, anything can happen with a group of people that live by their own set of rules and usually break them. It's adventure, excitement and loads of treasure. Anyone who ever wanted to be a pirate will love this show!"

The winner will be the first contestant to find the largest booty, a treasure worth $500,000.

With all of this emphasis on big booty, one might guess Sir Mix-a-Lot would be the perfect host. Instead, the host will be Australian actor Cameron Daddo, who may be familiar from films including "Big Mamma's House 2" and TV appearances on shows like "Boston Legal" and "The Young Indiana Jones Chronicles."

    Reports: 'Survivor' Heads to China

It will be the show's first mainland season since 'Survivor: Amazon'

    April 18, 2007

"Survivor" will take a break from anonymous island settings when it moves to China next fall.

Confirming a story first reported in several online venues, Variety is saying that "Survivor 15" will take place somewhere mysterious in mainland China.

This will be the first "Survivor" outside of an island environment since "Survivor: Amazon," the show's sixth installment. The trade paper says that filming an entire season of an American network TV show will be precedent-setting for China and part of the ongoing loosening of government restrictions on U.S. entertainment projects in the country.

The finale of "Survivor: Fiji," the show's latest installment, will take place in New York City on Sunday, May 13.

FOX Pulls 'Bones' Episode After Tragedy

In wake of Monday's (April 17) tragic shootings at Virginia Tech, FOX has replaced this week's scheduled episode of "Bones."

Wednesday's originally episode, titled "Player Under Pressure," found the drama's main characters investigating human remains -- identified as a star student-athlete -- found under the bleachers at a college gym.

After 33 people were killed on Virginia Tech's campus in the deadliest mass shootings in U.S. history, FOX moved quickly to pull the "Bones" episode.

"Out of sensitivity to the victims and families touched by this senseless tragedy, we felt the change was appropriate," a FOX spokesperson says.

It has yet to be determined when or if the "Player Under Pressure" episode will air. The "Aliens in a Spaceship" episode, which first aired in November, will show this Wednesday in its place.

'Grey's' Spinoff Not All About Addison

Two-hour episode also keeps foot in Seattle

ABC has released a few more details about the "Grey's Anatomy" spinoff, including the fact that even more familiar faces will be present during the two-hour sweeps episode.

For starters, there's a definite airdate for the show -- Thursday, May 3 -- and a title, "The Other Side of This Life." That presumably refers to the basis for the potential spinoff, with Addison Montgomery (Kate Walsh) headed from Seattle to sunny Santa Monica to visit old friends from med school.

But the show won't focus entirely on Addison's road trip. Back in Seattle, Cristina (Sandra Oh) is trying on wedding dresses and enduring the input of both her mother and Burke's mom (returning guest star Diahann Carroll) as she plans her wedding. Jane Doe (Elizabeth Reaser) also suffers a setback, forcing Derek (Patrick Dempsey) to perform emergency surgery.

The Addison portion of the episode will feature Tim Daly ("The Nine"), Merrin Dungey ("Alias"), Taye Diggs ("Day Break"), Paul Adelstein ("Prison Break"), Amy Brenneman ("Judging Amy") and Chris Lowell ("Veronica Mars"), all of whom are slated for regular roles if the spinoff, currently titled "Private Practice," gets picked up for next season.

Former "Everwood" regular Stephanie Niznik, Andrea Bendewald ("Suddenly Susan") and Gary Hershberger ("Six Feet Under") will also appear in the episode. "Grey's" creator Shonda Rhimes wrote the episode, which Michael Grossman directed.
